This week we're starting in on a new song: Dark As A Dungeon by the great Merle Travis. The basics of this song are pretty straight forward - perhaps the most unusual (and coolest) thing about this song is the 5 bar phrase lengths that most of the song adheres to. Count it out loud and you'll see what I'm talking about. Despite rhythms related to 5 being unusual in western popular music, playing this song is very simple because the phrase structure follows the melody so clearly.
