Greetings My Fine Musical Friends! Here we are again in the happy land of Social Music with a song I learned from the great Bessie Jones, a singer, storyteller and keeper of African-American traditions. She performed for much of her life with The Georgia Sea Island Singers. I’ve heard this as a gospel song but the version we’re learning here is something that Christians and non-Christians can all lyrically agree on. The Tune is in the key of C and we’ll be playing it as C7 with F7 and G7…a lot of seventh chords! And what a treat that can be. Because this has that blues / gospel type of feel we’re going to dig in hard to some of the simple and highly effective bass runs that will drive it along. We’ll also talk a little bit about possible ways to engage a crowd and get everybody singing along.
Let me know what you think…it’s a treat to be here with you again at the Sonic Junction!
