Hi Chris, I don't think I've ever seen you include the B bass in your G chords. Do you find it just not necessary or don't you like the sound of it? Are you saving like an ace in the hole for bass runs? When you strum a G chord you just mute a A string correct?
Hi Billy, that's correct, I almost never play a B on the 5th string if I'm playing a G chord, unless I'm leaving the low G out of the chord. Then the B becomes the bass note and makes a nice inversion. The main reason I do that is that it sounds a bit muddy to my ear to have that particular note in that particular chord. Also, most of my alternating bass notes are on the 4th and 6th strings and the strums are usually taking place on strings 1-4. And I think you're actually right, it does kind of act like an ace in the hole on G runs! I just use the underside pad of whichever finger is playing the note on the 6th string to mute the 5th string.
There's certainly nothing wrong with that note in that chord, BTW, it's more of a personal preference thing.
