I almost think after "Getting out of town" your intro...this should have been your next lesson. Rick, I've been here just about since the beginning...Develop your ear cannot be over stated plus keeping it in the pocket....You and Jerry...old school..
create the foundation. So I'm leading up to some thing....Jerry did his signature piece "Blues in a dream" I love your stuff...can ya do your materia on here ?
For a physical tuner (not something to download on your phone or computer) and standard simple guitar tuner with a microphone you can get at a music store or online (such as a basic Korg model) will do.
This might be your most important lesson series so far of all you've shown....like you said "this is gold". I've been with you here on sonic the whole way starting with Getting Out Of Town which I love...but....this puts it all together for me. I've been drinking beer and playing harp seven years all as a hobbiest, never calling myself a wanna be harp player. I can hold my own now and at least get some major respect if anyone calls me out. You the man Rick!.
Thanks Robert - I'm glad you're diggin it! This series is gonna be really good for developing phrasing, timing and patience. Like Jerry says, there's nowhere to hide in a slow blues. Thanks for the feedback!
Hey Rick....Somewhere in Jerry's long list of lessons he mentions when he practices he just plays acoustically. Do you do the same or do you amp up? Jerry figures if it sounds right acoustically it will sound fine on stage....Any thoughts? Damn I'm having fun on this sight....oh, don't worry I know "ya gotta keep it in your mouth".........
Hi Robert - Jerry's absolutely correct in this way - if your tone doesn't sound good acoustically, it won't sound good amplified. I think that's probably the idea Jerry's trying to convey. Many relative beginners seem to think that the right amp or the right mic will be the answer to their tone problem. I hear a lot of guys who are in love with a super distorted sound probably because it masks their actual deficient sound. The only reason I demonstrate this piece both amplified and unamplified is because of the relative differences in the note-shaping hand techniques used.
Hey Jerry...been waiting for this one!.....I'm gonna put everythibg I got into it...Thanks for putting your signature piece out there and sharing it. I really mean that, Your giving your all to us students. Back in the day when you were out on the road did you just pull marine band harps out of the box and play this song or did you have them tuned up?
George is often overlooked for sure! For many years (since the 90's) I've been telling people about him and trying to spread awareness of his awesome style and techniques. Still one of my biggest influences and he really did influence pretty much most, if not ALL, of the top players out there in some way. Thanks for diggin' this!
Don't sweat it Rick...You did well..I was worried about you teaching the "groove" concept because in the DVD you had to cover alot of material in a short amount of time and move on. This lesson you had the time to break it down....Thanks!....Oh one more thing...before this lesson series is over can you do the famous quote just for the fun of it...."You gotta keep it in your ______" ? (I don't want to spoil it....lol)
I'm liking my chops Rick.....Can't wait to get started.....I saw you last year at Challahans in Metro-Detroit. Let's do this Rick! Put some groove in us....lol I have your DVD you signed it...but now...hot damn!....in detail, lessons..Ive I gone to harp heaven....?
Jerry, I'm having the time of my life on this site! About time we did a slow cry in your beer song! Do you ever play at Challahans music hall in the detroit area? Just a thrown stone from chicago?

He was lucky in that respect. I never had that!
