Hi Folks,
This week the great Ellington classic Mood Indigo is our new tune to learn. Its a truly beautiful and simple piece of music that is fun. In fact its my favorite ballad to play. This weeks lesson is on the chord form and it's relatively easy song with easy changes. Get the chords down and then we'll start working on the chord melody ala my arrangement.
See you at Sonic Junction!

Hi Lauren, Thanks, a good way to arrange it would be to Play the chord melody then sing it after. In the 30s the style was a big musical set up then sing one chorus and more music with just the one vocal chorus. I like that approach myself. but of course what ever you want to accentuate is a personal preferance. So I say have fun with it how ever you chose to do it. Duke
Hi Duke,
(so happy to have found this site and your lessons here!)
Love this tune, Thanks!
If i'm trying to sing this would i lighten/play less melody - (or leave some out altogether) for verses?
Thank you!
Lauren
Wow , that's nice !!! Thanks Duke .
My Pleasure Tom! Duke
What a treat! And can't wait to get into that melody - sounds like the Sinatra version, on 'Wee Small Hours of the Morning' (best Sinatra album? So heavy it should only be available on prescription!)
Thanks Duke!
Hi Charlie, I love Sinatra's version of it. Fabulous arrangement also! Duke
Hey Duke! Well, Duke Ellington is my main man, so I'm in heaven with this tune. I feel like my slow feel has really improved. Would love to hear what you think of this. If you get a chance, I'd also love to get your opinion (good or bad!) on my version of "Judgement Day" from the last lesson. I've gotten mixed reviews. My wife doesn't like it, but she's not really much of a blues fan. I think there are some places where the two guitars really work together well, where they sound like more than a sum of the parts. But it would mean a lot to me to hear what you think about both this lesson, the chords for "Mood Indigo", and also "Judgement Day". I include both of them here for your convenience. ;-) Hope all is well with you! Thanks, Bruce
Hello Duke,
Hope all is well. I like your chord work, it would be really grand if SJ could print your chords to these songs in chord boxes, labeling the name of the chord at the top of the chord box, also including what fret the chord starts on the botton of the chord box, it would be a great help and learning tool. Reason is, I can hardly see your fingers from my small screen,
Thanks,
Mike
Hello Mike, I think that is a reasonable request. I'll mention it. Thanks, Duke
