Hello Folks,
This week we are learning the head to "Flying Home." I teach the melody in two positions because I usually play it in the root position and I believe Charlie Christian plays it in a different position. Either way, it's whatever feels best or sounds best to your own ears. Both ways are pretty straight ahead and easy to finger. It's a great swinging head and although it's credited to Benny Goodman and Charlie Christian it obviously was conceived by Christian because it's so guitaristic! Anyway, it's an extremely fun song to play. I also demonstrate my introduction I use for the version I recorded with Herb Ellis. It has a nod to Illinois Jacquet at the end of it with the cool descending diminished lick into an ascending augmented lick which is an ultra cool sound.
Enjoy and keep the videos coming!

Hi Duke,
I'm finally around getting to this lesson! :-) I've been working very hard on getting the swing feel right, because I feel it's always been a problem for me, even on the piano. So I'll be anxious to hear what you think of this. Am I getting close?
Thanks,
Bruce
Hi Steve, Very good. Don't worry about the mistakes toward the end you got the most important part; you swing! I like the way you play the 2nd bar of the riff by sliding into it, it really swings!
I just had to use my trusty L5 for this. Again i seem to lose my concentration at the end. oops. Thanks to Mike I now know to upload the video rather than using the on board link. Cheers Duke, great stuff.
Been listening all week to you and Herb doing this . This is one cool tune . You gotta show us that great intro , Duke .
OK we'll do the intro also next week. Thanks! Duke
