Hi Friends, This week we are wrapping up Gypsy Woman. The last verse is similar musically to the 2nd. The guitar is even a bit simpler than the other verses as far as what Muddy is playing. I demonstrate the verse then show you a few alternate riffs and chords you can use for the verse or the ending. I'd love to see more videos from you of this song. Next week, we start a new song.
Enjoy! Duke

Hi Duke!
I keep working on lessons I already covered as I move forward, so here's a new version of this, 9 months later. Chris Eldridge's lessons have inspired me to sing more unihibitedly and my playing -- I think, anyway -- sounds a lot more confident. I keep telling every guitar player I know that your lessons here at Sonic Junction have changed my life! I really can't thank you enough, Duke.
Would love to hear your thoughts regarding my progress on this and of course, any advice for improvement would be most appreciated. Sending best thoughts for continued recovery with the shoulder.
Best regards,
Bruce
Hi Duke. This was a fantastic lesson!
I'm continually amazed by the incredible things you point out that nobody else talks about. Even though each verse is quite similiar on guitar, you always have so much to say about music and the blues that is inspiring and enlightening, like how you pointed out how in the 2nd verse, the words get a lot busier. So the 1st verse is like the introduction, setting the scene and the 2nd verse builds tension and drama by Muddy's vocal rhythms, pushing the listener's ear to the solo. I'd heard Gypsy Woman dozens of times before, but never noticed this. It's a lesson in blues songwriting!
And the quick mention that it's cool to do an extra intense riff before going to the IV in the last verse of a 12 bar blues -- wow! What a revelation that is to me, and once I heard you say it, it made perfect sense and I can remember hearing that in numerous examples from great players.
So here's an attempt at this. I made a backing track for myself, so it's Sunnyland Bruce on piano. :-) It's hard for me to hear my voice on it because I keep comparing it to Muddy's incredible voice, but I'm singing as honestly as I know how.
Thanks for the lesson!
Bruce
Awesome!! Love playing and especially the singing. Great interplay between the two also. I'm inspired.
thanks Duke - will do ! (and will put more sensitivity into the rakes - for some reason I got into a rip-the-strings-off sound when I was playing this, who knows why)
my wife is now officially fed up with hearing me play this a million times - I need a man cave / recording studio
... like it or lump it baby, you your mother's bad luck child ...
Sound good and raw Allan, The blues ain't for everyone ya know! One suggestion on the D chord rakes, they sound better if played lightly. It's more of a background part. Keep on playin the blues! Duke
Duke, just found out you are coming to Chicago October 2 at SPACE. That's my birthday so I got tickets for a buddy and I (the wife is more of a Symphony gal - she studied clarinet under Larry Combs and Greg Smith).
Sooo happy to be seeing your show soon!
cool!
Hi Peter, Sounds good, Where did you the video? Very wild lighting! Keep up the good work. Duke
