Lightnin'

5th Verse Breakdown

Rick Estrin here, back on Sonic Junction with the fourth lesson in this series - my take on James Cotton's classic cut, "Lightnin". This week we're breaking down verse five. This is the first of two triplet "build" verses in this piece. Verse five utilizes percussive tongue tapping or slapping, in conjunction with some subtle volume swelling to produce a powerful, attention grabbing "build". After the intensity of that "build", we drop back, at the IV, and abruptly begin restating the simple theme lick. This verse is a perfect example of the emotional power that can be created just by employing some dramatic contrast in your playing.

Have fun with it, and we'll be back next week!
