Hi Folks,
This week we are starting on soloing on Skippy's Dream. I am going to give you a lot of my standard ideas and riffs for soloing on this. They are meant to help you find your way around a 1/6/2/5 progression. They are not meant to be a solo per se. The idea is to learn some of the patterns that I use as an "example" of things you could play and many of these riffs are ideas from which I build my solos, at least in part. I want you to learn as many of these as you can but the point is to listen to other guitarists, horn players, keyboard players playing tunes based on I Got Rhythm changes and get some solos, riffs, melodies in your head and try learning some of them. It's a long process and it takes a lot of time, research and practice on your part to actually learn how to improvise on this type of thing. If you take my advice and really develop your ear and also your knowledge of scales it should help immensely. I'll try to put together a list of artists and tunes to listen to.
Enjoy!
Duke

Hey Peter - that down on the neck/up on the bridge is what I've been going for - gives you a stronger accent on the 2 and 4. Paul K talks about it a bit on 'The Song is Ended' lesson.
Hey Duke...retired here down in Baja Mexico ... just got internet....I just started getting into playing my guitar again...good to see you giving lessons ...hearing you play, reminds me of the old days at the Knickerbocker and Roomful with drummer Charlie Riggs.....Thanks again. JD
I have a technique question - I notice sometimes you're using your little finger but mostly not. Is that concious or unconcious? As in is it deliberate or something that's evolved naturally with playing?
Most my playing I guess I'm using my first 3 fingers and thumb, but a lot of the major scale stuff feels more natural adding the little finger. Saying that I had a hard time getting the meoldy down line down until I dropped the little finger, and now it flows comfortably. I'm guessing the deal is to not over think it, but any pointers would be very welcome.
Cheers
Thanks Duke .
