Sweet Home Chicago > Vocal Rhythm & Fills

Hi Friends, This week we are concentrating on the first 3 vocal verses of the song "Sweet Home Chicago." We start on the first two verses Jimmy Reed style then add in the fills on the G and high E string with a pick and the middle finger. We use just a plain B7 for the five then do a classic blues turn around to complete the verse. Second verse is the same and on the third verse we add in a little fill every bar of the one then finish that verse the same way. Next week is on to the solo section.

Enjoy! Duke

Hi Steve, Got the groove happening here. Yes, I agree, rhythm playing needs to be second nature when you sing so being well rehearsed on rhythm is necessary for the confidence to sing. Sounds good! Duke

Thanks Mike,

I need  my fingers thinking for me when I'm trying to sing. It's nice if your fingers have "legs of their own" so to speak when stepping up to the mike...

Hi Steve ... sounds great.  Love that Tele tone!

It's cool looking back at your earlier video and seeing how the rhythm is going into your muscle memory (i.e. becoming "spinal").

Hey Duke,

Here's the One plus One long and short parts...

Getting these on video is a nice practice regiment.

Would you consider teaching us the classic minor blues tune 'Idle Moments' by Grant Green?  It's one of the finest jazz blues I've ever heard.  The only thing I've found available for it online is this lead sheet and story of the recording session:

I'm new here, and enjoying the site!

Thanks,

Jim

hey thanks Duke   -  means a lot to me esp. coming from the ol' Honeybear himself   -   well, those previous lessons sure look tempting, so I think I'll go back and do some poking around in there too

Some recommendations:  nice to have some syncopated rhythm lessonsShe Caught The Katy

Live the Life I Love (Muddy Waters)

She's Into Something (Muddy Waters et al)

She's a Good Un (Otis Rush)

Easy instrumental - Chicken Shack

Though Sweet Home Chicago is a great tune and classic as done by the late great by Magic Sam, I think his version of "Don't Want No Woman" is amazing (later to discover that the lead part was largely a carryover from Clarence Holloman (Bobby Bland)).

I'd love to learn Five Long Years.  Right now I'm listening to Lurry Bell play it.  Do it your way.  I'm looking for guitar skills.

By the way, I really like your Duke's Blues CD.  Highly recommended.  Top shelf.  Low Down and Tore Up too!  Excellent. This is what I reach for when I need to shake off the working stiffness.

When I'm sitting on the train in the morning, I consistently reach for Freddy King, Robert Nighthawk, Big Joe Turner, John Lee Hooker, Magic Slim, Magic Sam, Buddy Guy, etc.  Now, I'm reaching for the Duke!  Man, I love your energy and spirit when you play.  As I recoupe what guitar skills I might have had earlier in life, this is exactly what I've been looking for.  Thank you for these lessons.
