Hey Duke,
On the subject of comping those old and old-style jazz and blues songs. . .The Duke Robillard recordings from1990's AFTER HOURS SWING SESSION brilliantly showcased songs that included this key guitar and piano element (comping) that kept those tunes chugging and bouncing along
Two songs that I learned from this collection were I Can't Believe You're Still in Love With Me and I'll Never Be The Same.
I Can't Believe was recorded in 1933 by Billie Holiday (among countless other popular versions) Billie's version featured The Teddy Wilson Orchestra. Teddy was no slouch when it came to piano comping. The guitarist on this version carries the main "bounce" as Teddy fills with subtle accents, much the way that Albi Coply (original Roomful pianist) has always done
Below is the original transcription guitar lesson that Walt Bibinger quickly scribbled while listening to the song in the last few minutes of a 1997 lesson. . .
Duke,
I meant to ask, will you be teaching these great old songs and how close to your playing is this transcription.
Billie Holiday's version of I Can't Believe. . . is on YOUTUBE
mars5,
Thank you for sharing the written lesson!
I'm definately going to try this out.
Steve
mars5, I just ran through that chart. Very nice! Thanks again. I'll be working on this one to make it part of my repertoire. I would love to hear and see you play it if you have the ability to slap up a video. The Billie Holiday version you posted seems to be very close to Duke's recording if my memory serves me well. Really great stuff.
Steve
Steve,
I love that Billie Holiday's voice takes on trumpet-like qualities at times on this song!
I have an old Harmony "Patrician" that needs new strings before I could play this song again. . .
It would never work with my Gibson or Taylor acoustics!
