Here is a slideshow I made for Duke's lesson of West Side Shuffle.

I recorded an audio track and then put some images of Duke I found and ones of me in my band playing days.

The lesson features a backing track where you get to trade 4s with Duke which was a lot of fun.

Cheers & Happy New Year,

Marty

Hi Harvey --- that sounds like a connection speed issue.

--- are you logging on from a different location?

OR

--- is there someone else trying to watch videos online the same time you are?

If you email me at --- mike@sonicjunction.com --- with a 4-6 sentence description I can help you work through it.

Mike

Mike, it was, indeed, a connection speed issue.  My internet provider has just replaced my modem, and the speed is back up to snuff. Thanks for your help.

Hi Mike,

For the last few days, the video lessons have been breaking up or stopping altogether.  If I hit the play button they restart but soon crash.  Is the problem at my end or yours?  Thanks.

Sonic Junction is thrilled to welcome The Prince of New Orleans, Piano Legend Davell Crawford to our teaching team.

The embodiment of New Orleans’ spirit, genius, and tradition, Davell is recognized as “one of the most talented musicians alive.”  Davell‘s mastery spans beloved Louisiana classics to work fusing his influences in jazz, blues, gospel, zydeco, funk and beyond.

Davell's lessons focus on songs and techniques in blues, jazz, gospel and New Orleans piano.

Check out Davell's music and detailed syllabus here:

Davell on the keys is a real treat.  Check him out and spread the word to your piano friends--I think Davell's artistry will blow you away too.

Let the good times roll,

Mike

Hi Mike

I planned on doing an old Harry James song that was covered by Bing Crosby and Les Paul (Its been a long, long time) but our 12 week old doxie puppies are currently commanding a lot of our attention. I will instead post an older video of me doing an Earl Hooker instrumental that i would love to share.

Cheers

Steve

Yes that's a good one Bruce. Never tried to learn that one. It was a very popular tune in the 40s. I agree Bill's take on it is very cool!   Duke

Hi Bruce, Thanks I'm glad you like ukulele swing. I wrote it years ago. I don't really consider myself a uke player. I learn a tune when i need one for a recording, so I don't really feel qualified to teach uke. I'll consider it though..... Thanks, Duke

Hey Duke - how about some of your soloing on Scratch My Back when you were with The Fabulous Thunderbirds - then we could really cut it up with Jerry's harp lesson?

Greetings Geoff and thanks for signing up and welcome.  Actually we will be adding some videos that will focus on fundamentals.  As of now that info is found throughout the lesson series.  So please stay tuned.  Since you are new to the style I think it is best to begin learning songs first...this will help you learn the language and how the riffs and rhythms go together.  I find that when we learn just riffs and licks outside of learning a whole song it takes us a lot longer to play.  That being said, some songs really demand our patience; sometimes it is best to take small bites and chew them very well, if you know what I mean.  Take it steady and slow and work with the basics, which are rhythm, tempo and melody.  Always focus on the rhythm and what the bass line is first.  This is your foundation upon which you will build your song.  Really, a lot of this work is listening...not only to yourself but to the parts of the song you want to learn.  Identify the bass line, learn the rhythm and tempo...listen to the target song a million times and then a million more.  Pick it apart with your ears.  I hope this helps.  Thanks again.

Hi Doug,

Yes --- we are going to be rolling out a new sheet music / tab system over the next couple weeks.

It will include, tab, standard notation and chord diagrams.  Duke's next lesson will be notated with the new system --- so any thoughts and feedback you have on it would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

mike,

some of the newer lessons from Duke no longer have chord diagrams. Any chance we get these back or at least get a general page of the chord shapes that Duke uses?

thanks,

Hi Duke! I was listening to some other Bill Jennings stuff and I am absolutey knocked out by his version Sweet & Lovely. I've been working on it, but it'd be a blast to see how you interpretet it. It's such a cool song! Hope all is well with you. Regards, Bruce

Hi Corey, I've just signed up from hearing a couple of your songs and wanting to play like that!

I've been on and off self teaching myself over the years but i'm quite new to this style of blues. I just love the sound and am really excited to learn from your videos.
I am in a very similar situation to Maurizio, trying to pick up the muscle memeroy bass line.

Apart from starting with Catfish Blues and then Everybody Got to Change Sometime, are there any videos here starting at a fundamentals of blue playing level? Or would you suggest jumping to learning from the songs?

Thanks for making me dust of my guitar! :)
