Hey Sonic Junction, it’s Rick Estrin.
I’m back, and this week we’re beginning the lesson portion of my new first position series. The verse starts out with a simple statement. As the idea unfolds, we’ll expound a little bit on that statement, introducing a small variation just to break things up. We’ll depart from the established theme with a couple bouncy little licks on the V, and the IV, and finish up the verse with a concise little resolving phrase that’s going to come up a few more times throughout the song. As always, it’s very important to pay close attention to staying in the pocket. Keep the groove in your head - even during the spaces between the notes. That consistent mental groove is always applicable, and it’s so crucial, I’m going to suggest making it a general rule. It could turn out to be the best Christmas present you ever gave yourself!
Happy holidays, and I’ll see you next week!
Rick
