This week we start on Route 66. One of the most genre defying tunes ever! It's a blues, a pop song and a jazz standard all in one! The first lesson covers the intro and first instrumental chorus. The cool sixth riff should be familiar if you have followed my lessons all along then on to chromatic 13th chords leading to the 4 chord. We then play a repeated single string riff until double stops at the end of the verse.
Enjoy!

Well Duke, I've got to see you whenever you came to town and now to be be able to learn a few licks from you is an honor. I am 65 years old and proof that an old dog can learn new tricks with the right teacher.
The pleaseure is mine Mike! Duke
The 13th is nice, I hear another chord on the top of the 13th walk up on the Nat King Cole version, thanks for the cool licks Duke, its a pleasure to study with you.
Hey Bruce cool version of it A La Chuck/stones! are you saying the slide guitar is a keyboard? If it is you fooled me........
Ha ha! Sorry, Duke. No, I meant that I'm playing the intro on guitar as well as rhythm guitar, and a more experienced guitar player was playing slide. Then later on, I overdubbed my keyboard (piano) part. Anyway, glad you liked it. The band never went anywhere, but c'est la vie (say the old folks)!
Sounds great Bruce and you've got the right job for the guitar!
Thanks, Duke!!
Hey Duke! I'm so glad I have my new (to me) 175 for this tune! It feels just great on it. So here's my take so far on the intro.
And here's a bonus video. :-) This is my band The Knee Tremblers from about 15 years ago doing our version. I'm doing the vocal, overdubbed keys and the (not too great) guitar that isn't a slide.
Thanks for the lesson, Duke. Hope all is well with you!
Bruce
Thanks Mike, The Song is Ended would be a great tune. One of my favs! Duke
Duke,
Your admiration for Nat Cole is. much appreciated. Ready for The Song is Ended, another great Billy May arrangement for Nat. Love your jazz standards on the swingin album.
Thank you. Great song, great arrangement. Just what our band needs to counterbalance all the ballads and bossa's we play. It will keep the audience awake too!
Wieger
Hi Wieger, after the chromatic 13th chords it finishes the intro as straight blues. So after the C13 it's C7 2 measures G7 2 measures A-7 1 measures, D7 1 measure. Then 1 measure of G7 then 2 beats on A- 7 , 2 beats on D7 . That should do it! Duke
Hi Duke, I'd like to know which chords are played under the 8 bars right after the 13th chords and before the first chorus.
Thanks, Wieger
Hello Weiger, I hope I am understanding your question correctly. After the beginning of the intro where we play the 13th chords chromaticlly up to the 4 chord all the chords are the straight blues chords chords. If I am not getting your question feel free to expand on your question. Thanks, Duke
Hi Duke,
Revisiting your great lessons on Route 66, I've got one question just to make sure. Do I hear correctly that the chords under the second part of the intro are those of the turnaround?
Many thanks & best regards,
Wieger
Hi Allan, Sounds good, you've got the idea. As you said just need to relax a bit. All that takes is practice! Duke
well this only took about 500 takes ...! it feels like I need to relax & put some swing into it ...
Greetings to you Maximiliano, I love Argentina and all the music there! I am a fan of traditional tango music and 100 year old singer Nelly Omar. Duke
Very good all lessons, it is an honor to learn from Duke, Greetings from Cordoba Argentina.
Thanks Mike, Good job! may I suggest you add an extra note on the end of the riff that's on the 4 and 1 chord. It's a da da on the last note. Very good job and you are getting it quite well. Duke
Thanks Maximiliano, Unfourtunately, I only understand English. Duke
Muy buenas todas las lecciones, es un honor aprender de Duke, saludos desde Cordoba Argentina.
