Hello Folks, This weeks lesson is on more soloing on "Too Hot To Handle." This time we are listening to and taking ideas from my live version on "Stretchin' Out Live" on Stony Plain. This version sports a seven chorus solo with a basic there that starts each verse. Due to a recent accident (a fall from slipping on ice) I fractured my left hand and cannot actually play at this time. Don't worry, I'll be healed up in no time and back to my usual method of teaching. For this lesson I talk you through each chorus explaining the theme that starts each chorus. I feel I give good guidance here to figure out what I'm doing. Looking forward to seeing who picks up on tips and figures out the licks. Send me some videos now! Next week I will have a special guest come in and teach some essential lessons on Freddie Green rhythm guitar.
Enjoy, Duke

Jack, Are you still in Rhode Island?
Yes I still live in ri. Im withThe band you see in the video we've added a keyboard player since then. We're playing our second swing night at the knickerbocker next wednsday night.
Jack, I will consider "Gee I wish." Its a very long solo and not so easy, I can't even play that whole solo anymore but I could certainly teach it piece by piece. There are a lot of interesting riffs in there. The last time I saw you you were being deployed to Afganastan or somewhere. I was pleased to see you made it back. See, I DO remember you!
Thanks for the encouragement Duke, yeh that be me.Im supprised you remember. Our band covers a few more of your tunes as well .
i would appreciate it if you would break down Gee I Wish some day.
Mike, thank you, yes that is the" freddy King ninth chord",I love that chord and try to fit in alot. probably too much.
Hi Duke, Sorry to hear you injured your hand. Speedy recovery and best wishes from the No-Ice-Netherlands!
Hey Duke bad news about the hand, here's hoping for a speedy recovery! My all time favorite performance of yours was at the Byron Bay Blues Festival in the late 90's.. you & the band really kicked it that night! Hope you're back on deck soon. p.s.You were playing a Strat style of guitar on those gigs.. can you remember what pickups were fitted? Cheers
Hi Mudcat, That was a long time ago but they were either Seymour Duncan or Lindy Fralin PUs. I still use their products mostly. Duke
Hello Duke , hope you have a speedy recovery.Cant tell you how much i appreciate these lessons and have enjoyed your work over the years.you have been my major influence . i have tried to listen closely to your playing and these lessons have been a real treasure. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Jack --- that is some great playing! I really like your tone too.
Love that chord you punch around 3:15 between the riffs --- is that the Freddie King 13th chord?
Hi Jack, Man you are smokin'! Proud to see and hear you play my song so well! Are you the same Jack Pharo that used to take lessons from me years ago? Keep up the good work. Duke
Sorry to hear about your hand, Duke. It happens. Speedy recovery, I'm here for the lessons and the insights and stories. You directed me to some great music. Keep up the great recommendations. If you have other Live recordings, let us know. I am a big fan.
I heard Gatemouth at Buddy Guy's Legends and I do remember his grouchy demeanor. I recall him saying something to the tune of "you young guitar players watching my playing think you can do it like Gatemouth. Well, that ain't going to happen, because nobody is like Gatemouth. You keep playing that guitar and get to sound like YOU! But I will always play Gatemouth better than you." I loved this. It's exactly how Blues musicians have a right to be.
Thanks Scott, Yeah that's a good Gatemouth story! Yeah that's Gate alright. I'll be back in no time better than ever and ready to go! Duke
Thank You all very much for your understanding. I will do everything in my power to heal quickly. In the meantime I will have some very special suprise lessons coming up for you! I'll be back soon! Duke
Thanks Peter, I plan on it! Duke
Duke,
Sorry to hear about your hand......speedy recovery
Bill
Thanks Bill, Duke
Hi Duke - so sorry to hear about your fall and damage to your hand. Just take it easy - your fans will understand that you can't play so don't try because you may delay the healing process. We can all wait until you are 'mended' - you are still a young blade (at heart anyway!) so that won't take too long. Speedy recovery my friend
Regards from Pete and your many fans in the UK.
Aspers, Thanks very much. Yes I will take my doctors advice! Duke
Wonderfull playing on the record Duke.....reminds me of Danny Gatton who is one of my favourites.
I recently bought your hotlicks DVD which is just great. It made me smile when i saw the younger you, all dressed to kill. :-)
I been working on the Charlie Christian / T-bone licks.....loads of fun.
Cheers
Hey Tubby, Glad you're enjoying the lessons. I had the extreme pleasure of sharing guitar chores with Danny for a brief tour with Robert Gordon. He was gracious, friendly, helpful and a lot of fun to hang and play with. I'll never forget him. Duke
wishing you a speedy recovery Duke! great recording of this great tune!
Thanks Shorty, I appreciate it. Duke
Tom, I have arthritis also, but i'll be fine before long. I know one other guy in California, Steve Samuels. Great player, he plays with a stub for a right hand and he's fabulous. Duke
Poor Duke...!!!
Did you ever think about all of the other great guitar players who played with crippled of injured hands...? Django Reinheardt's was injured in a fire, Less Paul had serious arthritis and Jerry Garcia had a deformed right hand. Can you think of any others...?
Hi Dave, Yeah, Bucky is amazing still! I have lots of his work over the years. He's a band all by himself! And John ain't no slouch either! I saw them come into the Iriudim 10 or saw years ago on a Les Paul Monday night gig and Les went and got a beer and those two tore it up! Duke
