Hello Folks, This weeks lesson is on more soloing on "Too Hot To Handle." This time we are listening to and taking ideas from my live version on "Stretchin' Out Live" on Stony Plain. This version sports a seven chorus solo with a basic there that starts each verse. Due to a recent accident (a fall from slipping on ice) I fractured my left hand and cannot actually play at this time. Don't worry, I'll be healed up in no time and back to my usual method of teaching. For this lesson I talk you through each chorus explaining the theme that starts each chorus. I feel I give good guidance here to figure out what I'm doing. Looking forward to seeing who picks up on tips and figures out the licks. Send me some videos now! Jack, I will consider "Gee I wish." Its a very long solo and not so easy, I can't even play that whole solo anymore but I could certainly teach it piece by piece. There are a lot of interesting riffs in there. The last time I saw you you were being deployed to Afganastan or somewhere. I was pleased to see you made it back. See, I DO remember you!

Hey Duke bad news about the hand, here's hoping for a speedy recovery! My all time favorite performance of yours was at the Byron Bay Blues Festival in the late 90's.. you & the band really kicked it that night! Hope you're back on deck soon. p.s.You were playing a Strat style of guitar on those gigs.. can you remember what pickups were fitted? Cheers

I heard Gatemouth at Buddy Guy's Legends and I do remember his grouchy demeanor. I recall him saying something to the tune of "you young guitar players watching my playing think you can do it like Gatemouth. Well, that ain't going to happen, because nobody is like Gatemouth. You keep playing that guitar and get to sound like YOU! But I will always play Gatemouth better than you." I loved this. It's exactly how Blues musicians have a right to be.

Hi Duke - so sorry to hear about your fall and damage to your hand. Just take it easy - your fans will understand that you can't play so don't try because you may delay the healing process. We can all wait until you are 'mended' - you are still a young blade (at heart anyway!) so that won't take too long. Speedy recovery my friend

Tom, I have arthritis also, but i'll be fine before long. I know one other guy in California, Steve Samuels. Great player, he plays with a stub for a right hand and he's fabulous. Duke

Did you ever think about all of the other great guitar players who played with crippled of injured hands...? Django Reinheardt's was injured in a fire, Less Paul had serious arthritis and Jerry Garcia had a deformed right hand. Can you think of any others...?
