A message to my guitar friends: Hello Everyone here at Sonic Junction, I am excited to say next week I am having my shoulder surgery. I have the best doctor for my procedure in New Englans so I am very confident I will be playing before too long. In the meantime, I am lucky to have two friends in Paul Kolesnikow and Mike Welch that are doing a superb job while I am indesposed. Up next is Paul Kolesnikow teacking Barney Kessel's "Salute to Charlie Christian." So those of you who love playing the swing style have an extra special treat coming! Enjoy, Duke

Hope all goes well with the surgery! I've been listening to Barney Kessel all day (his recordings with Julie London), so I'm excited about Paul showing us some of his style. And I'm loving Mike's lessons too.

But I wanted to echo Steve's message and just say a big THANKS - I'm really loving how SJ has opened up my playing. I'm far more confident and (i hope) tasteful in what I'm playing these days. Couldn't have done it without you - of course I know there's no such thing as the finished article, but I'm happy knowing what I do and reaching for what i don't.

ps picked up a Gretsch White Falcon the other day. A real beauty!

Hi Jean Michel --- thanks for the question and detail.  Yes --- the uploader is working correctly.

When you get the message "OK to finish and post comment" that means the video is received and you can post the video and text.  The video is transcoding in the background and will show up in a minute after you have published your comment.

Uploading the WMV is probably your best bet as the file size is likely smaller.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any more questions along the way.

Thanks.

Hi Cory,

Thanks for all the great lessons. I wonder if you would ever do a lesson on Runaway Man Blues by Floyd Council.

Thanks!

Duke,

Like so many of us I have spent a lot of time and money on guitars, strings, amps, pedals, and mods searching for the mystical "great tone" that I hear from so many great guitarists like you.  To my untrained ear I cant really hear the difference when trying them out between my $300 Squire and a $2,000 Fender, or between my $400 Dot and a $3000 Gibson 335. When I listen to recordings of Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker I love the sound they got and they didn't have all the great modern equipment available to them. I realize that this is a very subjective topic. I frequently read that great players say that tone comes mostly from your hands. If you think this is true could you comment a little bit about what this really means? What is the main difference I hear between my tone and that of great guitarists, and how do amateurs even get close to approximating that?

Thank you for all the great lessons and advice on here!

Hey Jerry, I live in the Dallas area and know of at least 3 good ongoing blues jams that I attend pretty regularly.  Let me know if I can help.

Yes, i am using the quilter for all my lessons. They don't sell the Quilter here in Canada. I would have liked to check your their 8 inch model. All the quilter Aviators use the same 100 w amp but use different size of speakers. I imagine the 8 inch altho lite might not have the dispersion or presence that i get from my Deluxe. That's why i went with the 1 x 12. For a solid state amp, they do a good job of modeling the tube sound.

I agree, I have been using a Deluxe Reverb reissue for the last 8 years. Great amp. The older reissues had an issue with the caps but i think they have overcome that. I also picked up a Quilter Aviator 1 x 12 for gigs with stairs. Check them out on youtube.

Thanks Duke - I just got a very good deal on a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe so hopefully that'll give me what I need. I've always loved the blues junior for tone but also convience - I'm a Londoner which is my excuse for not driving a car, so I have to lug my gear around on the underground which is a true labor of love!!!

I would also suggest local blues societies, because over time you can get to know and hook up with people you can benefit by playing with.  Many of these have long jams on weekends and people tend to play with the same friends.  It's a good way to network with similar minded folks in your area.  Other jams are inconsistent because they are usually in a bar and are required to be good for business; as well as promoting usually the presenter and a small number of their friends.  But for a long term relationship and access the blues socieites are a good thing to check out.

Sure Sunny, Where should i send it? Duke

Duke Robillard
Duke Robillard Jun 05, 2015

Hi charlie, It could just be that a blues junior is just under powered for a gig with so many peices. I fact, I like to use a blues junior on small gigs and sometimes even in just a quartet i can have a similar problem. The next step up would be a re-issue deluxe Reverb amp which is my usual amp of choice. There's quite a bit more clean headroom there and they have a good clean tone. I recommend them highly. i love a blues junior for recording but they are easliy drowned out. Duke

There are usually more than one blues jam in a city, sometimes many. i may payoff to investigate the different ones in your area. Not every jam is the same and once you get to know some of the people you may suggest that they try playing softer so you can all try and respond to each other better. Those kind of comments can get a hot or cold reaction but may be worth trying.Just a thought, Duke

There are lots of great blues players in the Dallas area Jerry. Shouldnt be hard to find them.....Duke
