Great lesson, Duke! I love those ideas, that is so enlightening. All of those riffs sound impossibly hard until you explain them. Can't wait for a track to play with! Thanks a lot! Best, Bruce
Hey Duke! Finally got around to working on this one. What a pretty tune, and Sunny's voice is so sweet on it. Still got plenty of room for improvement but I was wondering if you had any feedback or comments on the improvisational work on this. Or anything else! Thanks a lot! Bruce
Hey Duke! What a great tune! It made me realize I haven't listened to nearly enough Magic Sam! I was mostly just familiar with West Side Soul, but hadn't listened to the Cobra singles. Mostly unbelievably amazing stuff with the occasional thing like "Square Dance Rock" parts 1 and 2. :)
Thanks so much for the lesson. Am I getting the right feel on this? I wish there were some good local blues jams out here in LA. There used to be a good one in Santa Monica, but now the only ones I can find are way out in the boonies, and I just can't stay up that late anymore. ;)
Hey Duke! What a great tune this is to play. I feel a whole lot stronger after working on this one; much more in control of my neck vocabulary. I took your advice and listened to a bunch of versions and tried to learn some of the Django licks. Wow! That's insane stuff. But I learned a whole lot from exploring it in different ways. Anyway, there's a few klunkers; I tried to not say "oops!" and just play through them. :-) But I think there's actually some pretty moments too. Hope you like it! Thanks, Bruce
Hey Duke! So, just getting around to this lesson and it's great one! I love the jazz boogaloo feel. I've never played anything like this on guitar, so I hope I'm getting it mostly right. Looking foward to soloing over it!
Oh wow, thanks for the lucid explanation about that lick, Duke! I wouldn't have spotted that it was a quick rake giving it that "snap"! It's still pretty tricky to play, but I'm pretty sure I understand it now, at any rate. Thanks again! Bruce

Route 66 Solo

Hey Duke! Continuing to practice this. I feel like my phrasing is coming along so that it's swinging a bit more naturally. Would love to hear any thoughts! Thanks, Bruce
Hey Duke! I always learn so much from learning your solos, especially your nuances in phrasing. Sometimes one of your rests causes the rest of the phrase to get much cooler. I especially love that lick that you do in the 10th bar, where you slide up, play a note higher, then slide back down fast. I love that sound. I can't consistently get that great sound you get on it, but I'm working on it. Hey, if you have a chance, please watch the video I uploaded the other day for Route 66. I'd love to get your thoughts on that one too. Thanks, Bruce.

Route 66 Solo
Jun 24, 2016
Hey Duke! Well, I've been working on this one quite a bit. I'd love to hear what you think. Such a classic tune! Thanks, Duke.
Hey Duke. What a pretty approach to the melody and really fun to play. I wouldn't have thought of those beautiful little ornamentations, but they make the melody sound so guitar-esque! Really brilliant. Thanks for the great lesson! Would love to hear what you think of my take on this. Thanks again, Bruce.
I got to this lesson via the link from the chords page for Route 66 (which is a great lesson!) and my head just about exploded when I watched it. There's about 50 million great things to learn in this lesson! I just wish (cough, cough...Mike...) that the video and tab was in the modern format so I could more easily slow it down to play along with. All those new chords will take a while to get comfortable with.
Anyway, I'm so glad this lesson was sitting here waiting for me! I really need to go through these older lessons and catch up on everything I missed. Thanks Duke!
Love this tune. Reminds me of "Sweet Sue Just You", which uses the repeated II-V phrases in the A section. It's a trickier technique than it looks, playing those quick swing strums and keeping them locked in and played nice and evenly. Anyway, here's my take on it for today. Thanks, Bruce
Hey Duke! This is such a beautiful little chord solo! I'm not quite smooth enough on it yet, but it's coming along, I think. Hope you think so too! ;-) Bruce
Hey Corey. Here's my take on this. I grew up with the Rolling Stones version of this when I was a kid in the 60s and started listening to Robert Johnson because of the song. Their version used a pretty cool, but non traditional version of the turnaround. Anyway, this is a song I've loved for almost 50 years. Thanks for the lesson and insights. Bruce
Ha ha! Sorry, Duke. No, I meant that I'm playing the intro on guitar as well as rhythm guitar, and a more experienced guitar player was playing slide. Then later on, I overdubbed my keyboard (piano) part. Anyway, glad you liked it. The band never went anywhere, but c'est la vie (say the old folks)!
Hey Duke! I'm so glad I have my new (to me) 175 for this tune! It feels just great on it. So here's my take so far on the intro.
And here's a bonus video. :-) This is my band The Knee Tremblers from about 15 years ago doing our version. I'm doing the vocal, overdubbed keys and the (not too great) guitar that isn't a slide.
Thanks for the lesson, Duke. Hope all is well with you!

Thanks again, Duke! Take care! Bruce
Thanks, Peter! Wouldn't it be great if Duke did a Rockabilly tune? :-)
