Dennis-

Would love this- love the sound of chromatic in 3rd and have screwed around with it- but your working it out would be awesome

Hope you do it!

Happy New Year

Yeah, I'll be continuing to work on a simpler more integrated solution. It is a bit of a hack and not for the faint of heart ;) Your looper solution sounds like a good plan.

Your immersion in CAGED sounds interesting. Have fun.

Thanks Marty

As you say, it sounds messy. But, i'll take your word for it. I have ordered a looper. It will come in handy for creating backing tracks and practicing over various chord progressions. I am currently studying the CAGED method for blues guitarist outside of SJ.  It is really helping me get out of the blues box. It would be great if there were lessons here on the topic. So, not sure when I'll be back to SJ, but it is a valuable tool.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

This week marks my first attempt and merging audio and video from two sources and then editing them into a completed video. I've still got a lot to learn but I think it's going to be my way forward.

I'm running a Mac. For the audio I use an Apogee Jam into Garageband. For the video I just use the built in camera in my mac recording though the Photo Booth app. You can checkout my latest go at this on the "If I Had You" Soloing lesson. I recorded my own rhythm backing track and then did a solo over it. I export the video into a .mov file and then export the audio from GarageBand into an mp3. I import those into iMovie, sync up the two and edit (trim) the start and finish. I then export the finished video into a .mov file that I can upload to SJ.

I also have an audio capture app (Audio Hijack) that I use to capture Duke's backing tracks as mp3 files. I can then import them into Garageband and play along with them. The benefit is that I can mix levels in Garageband, do silent recording and have a full range of amps and effects models to pick from.

It sounds complicated but once you do it a few times it goes together pretty quick. After messing around with a bunch of other methods this one seems to work the best for me and as a bonus all of the apps I use are free  or come with the mac (other than the audio interface) so if you have a mac it's affordable. I'm sure there are similar (or better) options on a PC based system.

Regards, Marty

If I were to do a blues chromatic series, it would likely start from similarities with 3rd Position diatonic playing, since the blues chromatic playing would be in 3rd Position as well, and there are similarities between the two approaches. I would want to cover blues scale patterns, to help take some of the "guess work" out of what most blues players do when they pick up this crazy instrument. In addition to all of this, I think it's important to mention differences between playing the chromatic harmonica and the diationic harmonica, and habits to get yourself into and out of to help make this transition much smoother. Let me know who is interested - Thanks!

I would like to see some in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. We are talking a chromatic harp here where there is little to no end of it's ability.

Boogie'n With George, a first position number by one of the GREATEST blues chromatic harp players George Smith, would be, in my opinion, a good start for a 1st position tune. Third comes very naturally though. When I think about the first time I heard Boogie'n With George I had no idea from where it was coming from due to the chromatic being so extensively used in 3rd position. My ears and lack of experience decieved me in a major way. It took me a long time to figure it out.

I am very happy you are considering doing some lessons with the chromatic harp Dennis. You are one of the hottest chrome players in the universe.

The Chromatic harmonica is very expensive to buy. But I'm really not interested in it

Just out of curiosity, how many of you may be interested in a series for basic blues on the chromatic harmonica? Let me know your thoughts - thanks!

Without a doubt!  There is really not a resource, for playing in the G.Smith\Clarke\Piazza octave style.

Those of us who are interested have worn out learning the same songs but it is hard to improve without a better understanding.

I, for one, would pay extra for those lessons!

When you say "Boogie" what do you mean? That term is used for many different things...

I may not do that specific song, but I will be sure to cover some George Smith-like 3rd Position. I already tackled some of his style playing in Lookin' Sharp, but can do more in the future! Thanks

Hi Chris,

would it be possible for you to give the chords you and Julian play on the tune "sleeping by myself" please ? Especially for the chorus and the break (Forever be sad and lonely...)

Thanks a lot :-)

Hey Chris,

Would you be willing to do a lesson on singing and how you've developed your voice over the years?  I'm curious if you learned to sing by simply singing the number intervals and melody.  Do you have some specific exercises that you do daily that have helped over the years?  Are you entirely self-taught?

Many thanks,

Paul

Hi Jerry, I’m  starting to learn Blues for Big Nate and I have a question, in the very first lick, it goes from the 1 draw to the 2 blow to the 3 blow, but I hear a really quick last note  before you get to the 3-4 draw chord. What is it?

Hi Paul, those clip on mics were Audio Technica ATM-35s. Good little microphones that we liked because they weren’t *too* good. The DPA 4099 for instance is an incredible clip on microphone, but for our purposes they were actually too detailed. We have used pickups in conjunction with the clip-ons at times. I vastly prefer using the single mic to any of that, but sometimes in combat-conditions you need to use pickups and clip-ons.

Hi Chris!

I really like the lessons covering you and Julian's materiale. Would be cool to dip into tunes like Broadcast, Stone Cross and For Critter, just to mention a few.

Hope you will take them into consideration at some point.

Thanks, Jason

Hi, Chris:

What about those small mics from the early days (I think) of the Punch Bros.?  Did you use a pickup as well?

We caught you in Lincoln and Des Moines a couple years back and it was some of the best live music I've seen.

Many thanks for all the lessons, wisdom, and insights,

Paul

Hi Dre,

For these videos I mostly use a Neumann U-89 running through a DAV BG-1 preamp. It’s actually the same setup that Julian and I use when we play live.

Best,

Chris

Hi Chris!

Was thinking about what mic(s) you use in your videos?

Saturday at the Crossroad's was the first time I've seen you do If I Had You and I was blown away. The whole show was great but that song was over the top. The fact that I had front row seats didn't hurt. Once I finish Soft Winds I'm going to revist If I Had you. Thanks for a great night
