Hi Alan -- right now we're updating and re-releasing Jerry's Key To The Highway series of lessons.  Dennis is coming back from a Eurpean tour in a couple days and will be starting a new series in early August.  Rick will be up after that.

Just wondering whats the latest in the Blues Harp category as we don't appear to have had a new lesson published for a couple of weeks ??

Hey Bruce, I have a '78 silverface... also a '54 tweed champ 600. The original speaker on the tweed is about to go unfortunately. I love my Vibro-Champ too!

I think I was referring to the Epiphone. It looks like my ES-125tdc. That '42 must have a killer neck!

Take care, Lowell

Hi Lowell,

I've spoken to Mike Caren about issues uploading new profile pics. He said it's because the profile photo upload tool is written in Flash, which is becoming less and less well supported by browsers. So he's aware of that issue. You may be able to use it by downloading a new version of Flash, but he's planning it on rewriting it to support more modern technology.

I have a '65 blackface Vibro-Champ that I absolutely LOVE! My jazzy guitar is an ES-175. I think the 125 has one P90, and the 175 has two humbuckers, if I'm not mistaken.  Or perhaps you're referering to my '42 Epiphone Century?

Take care!

Bruce

Dan, thanks for getting back to me and for the advice!  I'll definitely try walking around and see if that helps!  It was pretty much a general questions... I think it would be useful for all of the songs to have that option.

Bruce, thanks for your input too!  I'll keep that in mind as well.  I tried to take a picture of my Silverface Vibrochamp for my profile photo but it wouldn't let me upload it for some reason.  Is that an ES-125 that you're playing in some of your posts?

Thanks again and have a great weekend!

Lowell

hey there lowell,

i think it may end up that all songs have the lyric option....i think it's a great idea.

i'll be in touch with mike about it.

one thing i know: he wants you all to have every possible tool that you need to really get inside these tunes.

i'm digging the gear talk here. it makes me want to take my blackface vibro-champ to the shop so i can be as happy as bruce!!

yr pal,

dan

hey there bruce!

i love that story approach! i'm going to see if i can use it to strengthen my learning.

i need all the help i can get.

the other challenge for me is when i'm learning a song in spanish or kreyol and i'm not sure what the words mean. it adds another layer of challenge but i think that it can be a useful way to learn a language (which is what i'm hoping now as i'm about to marry a haitian woman! english is her first language but for many of her family haitian kreyol is the first language and i want to be able to speak and sing with them in both languages so it's important that i get it together....).

all of this helps our brains stay loose which is a good thing.

thanks for checking in!!

hey there lowell!

thank you for reaching out.i just heard back from the king of sonic junction and he said yes to lyric sheets.

are there particular songs you'd be interested in or is it a general question. let me see if we can make it a feature for each tune that you can just download.

as far as memorizing lyrics, i struggle with this. my best method is somewhat clunky. i play the songs over and over and try to sing while i'm walking. if i wait until it gets close to performance time i can freeze up so really doing the homework in advance and staying relaxed helps my brain absorb the info. i also notice that there are several layers to the process and i can't really rush them. the good news for me is that once i get the lyrics and feel comfortable they'll stay in my head for ever if i keep playing the tune from time to time....

good luck!!

Hi Lowell. Gee, we look like twins, don't we? Tweed Twins.

I'm not sure what Dan would advise, but what helps me is thinking about the lyrics like a story. I try to make it a real experience in my head, so that I'm just remembering what happened to retell the story, if that makes any sense. Take care and best of luck! Bruce

Hi Dan!  I love the ukulele lessons and the idea of social music.  Any tips on memorizing lyrics to songs? Also, would it be possible to post a lyric sheet for the lessons too for us to look at once we have the back-up part down?

Thanks!

Lowell

Chris thanks again for doing Jerusalem Ridge. I was wondering if you could teach Butter and Eggs from your Avalon album with Julian Lage, this is another very cool tune, thanks Roy...

Chris , Roy Cotton here, I am practicing Old Grimes again, I would like to learn it for a recital in 2019. I played the A part for my guitar instructor today in Austin (Eddie Colllins), he said he kind of recongnized the basic A melody, and pulled put a Steve Kaufmann tab of the song Nancy Dalton, which did sound similar (not that lots of blue grass songs don't sound similar). Is there any relationship to Nancy Dalton, I did find a post from Devin online where he quoted you on its origin. Hope your doing well, come on back to Austin again for another show, Roy

Hi Roy,

Awesome that you're working on that for your reciatal! Re: the origin of Old Grimes, there are a lot of fiddle tunes that share a lot of material. I don't know the tune Nancy Dalton but I wouldn't doubt that they share some DNA. There's actually a fiddle tune called Duck River that basically also has the same A part.

The other thing that happens sometimes is that you will have 2 fiddle tunes with the same name but where the tune itself is totally different. Case in point, two versions of Blackberry Blossom:

Chris - last year I learned the pentatonic said scales in all positions and it really helped my soloing. New instructors are pushing me toward the modes now and it doesn't seem as useful; especially for bluegrass and country. What would you recommend?

Hey Kip, sorry I didn't see this until now! To answer your question, using the iphone is more for capturing an idea. We would record for the record in a more proper enviornment with nice mics and gear. But to just get the song down for our own learning/writing purposes, the voice memo app on the iPhone is great!

Hi Frank -- OK -- I sent you an answer via your contact us message yesterday.  I believe you have two accounts -- one is a guest / trial account and another is your full access monthly membership account.

HI - I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to optimize daily practice time. I have been playing for 2 years now and am feeling a bit lost on what to spend my hour or so of practice on a day.I usually work on practicing some songs that I can kinda play by ear, some scale stuff and some basics like bendind, tongue blocking etc but am feeling lost when it comes time to play to a backing track and just improvise which is what I would really like to be able to do and sound at least ok doing so.Maybe im just too new at playing and expecting too much but im also thinking that i may be quite musically challenged and am getting a bit frustrated with the time i put in for the return i am getting. Thanks in advance for any help .  Frank

Here is what I think screwed up the works during the "Processing" portion of the "Upload" ... I had this ---> ' <---- in the file name as in "OL' Grimes" ... as soon as I renamed the file and removed this ---> ' <---- the file uploaded and processed in seconds. Soooo, I thought I'd share that particular little piece of information in case anyone else may encounter a problem.

I could be wrong ...

Chris , a request for a new song, can you do lessons on Jerusalem Ridge, tab for Jerusaleum Ridge would help also,  I would appreciate that, I signed back up for more months tonight, for more of your previous lessons including Old Grimes, Church Street Blues, and Tennessee Waltz . Tony Rice does a vesion of Jerusalem Ridge with his brother Wyatt on youtube, but its tough to get it all off it from the video without tab, thanks for your consideration of lessons and tab for this new song, Roy Cotton, Austin Texas
