just a world to say i love to see your backing track !! You sing so well and play so well that very inspirating for me !! You voice he's very powefull too and like Duke you've got a nice collection of guitar !! It's alway a pleasure to see your backing track !!
HI Corey. it's awesome, all the little variations (rythmicly or not) you make with the same lick ! hard to follow ! It's the signature of the great ! Sometimes i think i got the riff and then you make a slightly variation that's make me say : hmm hmm not so simple ! I had to notate the rythm many time to be sure of what you do.
I really enjoy your lesson, too bad i hadn't so many time, if i could be seventeen and have whole day in front of me to play blues guitar that would be cool ;)
Hello Corey, i don't know if i could end this tune i just come back from vacation with no internet, but i'm still on SJ :) i'll practice this tune with some delay...
By the way, i wanted to thank you for all your work and confidence you gave to us !! We made a musical stage this holliday (8h of music a day for the students and big concert at the end) at my school and the teachers played too. So i've decided to play a version of Running and Hidding in open E with my resonator and sing too !
The other guitar teacher sung with me and that was cool ! What a feeling to sing in front of 150 people beating the rythm you play with your own thumb ! Not the same thing that only playing lead guitar in a band (even in front of more people). That was a great new thing for me and a lot of people discovered resonator, slide and fingerpicking in the same time !! We've played rock and jazz tune too but the audience really dig this tune ! So i wanted to thank you and Mike for all of your work :) !
Hope theses lessons we'll continue for a long time !
@Corey mrci pour les petits mots en français ;) i hope i could go to the USA for a while ! It's in my long time dream, hope i could do it in the next years :)!
@Corey thanks you Corey, i agree there is notes that are still hard to play. I think i'll do like you say. It's a real hard work to play thumb, melody and sing... so now, i have to clear up everything and work slowly ! I should be really confortable before adding the vocal part. But i'm like my students, i'll like to go faster than it should be ;)
this is a cool tune i didn't pay attention to it before ! I love MJH is got a low warm voice who makes you feel better. You take it a a quite challenging tempo but like this, there's no way without light brushing ! The hard things for french is that there's always of lyrics not so easy to say for us ! I can only articulate the chorus in his song :( i should go live in United states for a while :) !
Hello Corey, this my new attempt with bare fingers ! Hard to find a good version : every takes as mistakes in different place... I tried to make my vibrato with the thumb stucked to the neck and not from my elbow. There's a lot of things to do i guess but i'll keep this song for my "repertoire" and i'll work all the missing part from your lesson and then makes my own i hope.
Wow ! this lesson is really great ! So much thing about slide and vocal and dynamics ! I'm glad i can slow the video because your tempo was speed but it gives a another dimension to the song. This song is a classic and it's hard to find your own way for this one (although it's hard for all blues).
Your thumb remark is cool : i've notice that i have only "cale" on the edge of my thumb and not were you have some when you brush, so it's means i apply to much power in my thumb !
Have also a question : when you do a left hand vibrato, does your thumb stick to the neck and the vibrato comes from the wrist ? I've just notice that i make vibrato from my elbow... maybe that why i haven't a nice vibrato...
@Corey thx for your comments Corey, it might have been difficult to you to see the whole vdo because youtube added a strange effect that gives me "seasick" !!
I'll get my melody cleaner and throw the thumbpick for the next version. I've noticed for the extra beat on the B7 and maybe on the strum chord (i made many versions...) i think it's because of the singin that take me concentration... and being alone give me more liberty ;) I like the shuffle part too but maybe it's better with "It's hurts me too" lyrics because you gotta move sound more gospel than blues...
This my work in progress version, the bass dosn't sound loud because i was concentrate on playing simple and regular. Next i'll play loud bass to add the rythm drive you were talking about my latest version.
Although, there's false note in singing and playing but it's not finish... It's a cleaner version than my first version. There no much vibrato maybe i should play more of it. I ended with non slide shuffle comping because i hadn't the time to work the 3rd video and use your variation. I'll wait for your comment to get directions.
@Corey : Thanks for watching and your comment ! I'm going to work my tempo seriously now :) I'm playing with the alternate thumb like your version to give more rythme anchor to the song. I have also study where do you make long or short slide attack and vibrato or not. I'm aso waiting for the dynamic and dampening lesson as you told to dave. Nice lesson
@All Folks : That's cool all those videos ! It gave a lot a idea and working points and Corey's answer to everyone really help me. Love that place !!
@Duke OMG what great legend guitar !! That why the sound blowed my mind (and ears!) You're so lucky to play those guitar ! I'll try to find the cd on amazon !
So with your DeArmond you only use one G wounded in nickel and bass string in phosphor bronze ? it is that ? I had to try ! I used Newtone string for archtop wich have nice sweet smooth tone between flatround string and rounded string. But in acoustic i prefer Phosphor bronze ! I may try your solution !
Thanks for help Duke. Gear and sound is a great part of the guitarist journey ;) !
Hello Duke ! Nice lesson, i've not much record of Big Bill playing in single notes ! Do you know if he use a pick ?
Your version he's very nice on the cd ! What guitar do you use on the record ?
Another gear question : your epiphone is amazing (like all your guitar collection !) i've got the same emperor but from Korea wich is a good one. What string and gauge do you put on it ? Bronze in light gauge ? even when there's a pickup ?
Sorry for the gear questions here maybe it's inapropriate...
Corey you're a telepath ;) First you guess what Alex works, then me ! I've just post a version of "you got to move" on my youtube channel when i post video for Sonic Junction :) My version is more like the Fred mc dowell version that everybody plays. It's a smooth version without thumpick because i was sick this day. I was finding my version boring so i'm glad you post your video !! I was studying your version of "It hurts me too" to have some ideas because the melodie is similar. But know i've a new way to learn it ! Thanks a lot!
@Alex thank you :) your video's good too ! I understand for the foot ;) i i have big carpet so it make no sound ! I like epiphone too they make good cheap guitar but the brand sign reminds us euro ! When we came too euro everybody mades fun of my pickguard saying i was ready for euro. But my epiphones are good guitar :)
here's my second attempt. It's also a workin progress version with a lot of mistakes... But i won't post this one lately like i i use to do. I start with the Choke to let your hear it. It's still hard ! I think i "rush" the Bridge because i was nervous to forget part, i haven't the song completly in my head...
I've also post a version of Kind Hearted Woman and "Keep your lamp" could you give me just an advice on "keep your lamp" ? I know you're really busy but i wish i had some advice for the slide. Sorry to ask you that like that, hope it's ok.
@Corey : I've notice i missed the A bass on the main riff just after the pulling off and befor the G bass ! It disapear while practicing, now i play it again ! Try to play the variation now!
@Dave : yes, "record" button makes me speed up and playing in front of an audience too. The thing is to focus before start playing and think of the melody in your head to hear the good tempo and then play. But when i press "record" i don't take few second to breath and focus and i go fast ;)
And your right i learn a lot watching others video because others misstake are also mine. So when i remark something i say "hey i do the same let's work on it" for example i didn't play the brush but when Corey asked Alex to do it, i work on it :) !
Hello Rick,
