Thanks for your answer :)

Duke, it is no surprise that one of the greatest songwriters of all time would tap you to back him up. That said, I am pumped to see the Duke Robilliard Band later this month at 41 Bridge Street (More guitar solos!).

Hi Jerry,

Love the site!!! Even out of US I feel very close to the blues by use of this site!

I like Junior Wells style of playing too much. Do you think it's possible to have a lesson about his style and musics?

Thanks a lot!

Rafael

@JDY...yes I really dig that tune.  I have always wanted to learn it.  Once I get around to it I will share what I have learned with you all here.  Nobody can do it like Blind Blake!!  Thanks.

Jerry, I would love to hear you do a breakdown of Louisiana Blues, by Muddy Waters. This is one of my favorites.

Hi Jerry,

I love this song!  The version I have is off the "King Bee" album that I believe you played on.  Is the background harp theme a trill using the 3/4 draw holes? For a while I thought it was hand vibrato (if that is the correct term), but now I don't think so. Also, if I am not mistaken, isn't the same thing happening on "King Bee?"

A secondary question has to do with the way to do such fast trills.  Being very right-handed, I find it difficult to do a fast side to side trill without controlling the harp with my right hand.  While I guess that's okay, it is hard to maintain a good cup, and, if playing amplified with a mic, even harder.  I have been trying to learn to use a head shake instead, and am getting better at that, but for fast, sustained trills, like on "King Bee," I have a tough time maintaining a good rythym with a head shake.  My question is whether or not you've seen good harp players do this type of trill (amplified) with their hand rather than their head?  I will keep working on the head shake but it is so much easier for me the other way.

And congratultions to Bob Dylan for getting to perform with Duke!

Big fan of both guys, I'll have to look into the tour dates to see if there's one I can get to.

I guess that's a pedal or non pedal steel there behind Bob.  Cool!

hi duke - cool i was talking about the one you do with your buddy from a guitar shop (Empire Guitars).  Just gorgeous with both of you playing those parts.  Hopefully there is time to teach both parts of the the head to play with friends.

Big news! -- Sonic Junction's very own Duke Robillard is touring with Bob Dylan as he headlines the Americanarama Festival of Music, a 26-date U.S. summer tour.

Earlier this year, Bob Dylan approached Duke to join him on stage as his guitarist. Having known each other for some time and worked together on Dylan's acclaimed album Time Out of Mind, Dylan's invitation testifies to the esteem Duke holds among Duke's many collaborators / admirers -- Herb Ellis, Jimmy Witherspoon, Dr. John, Tom Waits and more.

Duke is committed to staying connected with all of us here at Sonic Junction while on the road -- he has technology with him to bring you the same intimate weekly lessons and personal feedback, as well as share his insights about the tour. Feel free to ask Duke any questions you may have.

A big congratulations to Duke!

Hi Jim, both good suggestions and I will add them to the list. Yes, "The Trouble with Me is You" is really that simple. Just descending dominant 7th chords for that first part.

Thanks, Duke

Hi John, at some point soon we will work on a Charlie Christian tune. When it comes to electric guitar there are 2 players that were the main inspiration to all the rest, Charlie Christian in jazz, and T-Bone Walker in the blues!

Thanks, Duke

Good morning Jerry,

I noticed that you commented that you like Crossovers when I was looking at them on either Ebay or Amazon.  I do, too, but also really like the new Marine Band Deluxe.  Have you tried those as well?  To me, they seem a bit mellower than the Crossovers or SP20s.  What I have been doing is replacing my SP20s with Crossovers in the lower keys (so far A, Bb and soon G) as they seem brighter and maybe a bit louder, and Marine Band Deluxes for the higher keys (so far, C, D, F).  Perhaps the difference is mainly in my head, but I like the way each make those keys sound for blues.  Does this make sense to you?  One good thing is that both the MBD and Crossovers feel about the same in my mouth so there is no perceptible adjustment (unlike the SP20s which have no ridge in the front - I used to like that but now have gotten used to the other).  By the way, I think your lessons are working (and lots of practice - Juke everyday - now 330 times and counting - plus plenty of other songs) as some of the better guitarists are starting to ask me to join them in the jams I go to.

Take care, or better yet, have a good time,

Rich Greenberg

I was listening, once again, to "Stratified" and was thinking what a great piece to jam on.

Might want to think about working that into a lesson plan as a jam tune, very imrov. Only have to start with the theme, a first 12 bars, the key, that sort of thing. Perhaps a backing track that is a continuous loop. What do you guys think?

Mike....I've just sent you an email with the two screenshots so we can understand each other much better!!!

for the second question...I'm almost always focused on the video...tab are usefull but I prefer not to abuse of it's use as the ear gets lazy...it get's lazy also if you just watch somebody else...

For me the really most important things are...have the weekly lesson and a quite regular feedback....this is the foundation, the heart of this wonderfull project...the rest, at least for me, is superfluous......design etc...it's like when Corey say for the blues., some spice is nice but we do want a really strong bass foundation because this is the root...;)

Hi Thomas,

Sorry for the delay and thanks for the thoughts on how we can make Sonic Junction better.  For the first one (being able to practice away from your computer), we will be making an iPod / iPad / iPhone app that will allow you to listen to lessons and backing tracks while not connected to the internet.  This will be coming out later in the year.

For Rick singing, it just comes down to a decision on what we feel most people want.  Since the focus of Jerry's lessons are on playing harp, we chose to have Rick sing for the tracks.

Thanks for being a part of Sonic Junction.
