Thank you Tim

, I love the old style of stating the melody first before the vocal.

Songs from this era provided two songs for the price of one! (Long instrumental intro)     We don't have the attention span these days to wait for the vocals to come in.  The DR versions of I'll Never Be The Same and {especially}The Lonesome Road are well worth the wait.

After a  brief  introduction that Billie Holiday speaks before her performance of "Fine and Mellow"; " I don't think I ever sang it the same way twice. I don't think I ever sang the the same tempo.. .The blues is sort of a mixed up thing, you just have to feel it. Anything I do sing, it's part of my life...

Witness the blues at its best. . .It doesn't get much better than Billie, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster,

also. . .Gerry Mulligan (low,,,,saxophone),Vic Dickenson(trombone) & Roy Eldridge!

regards,

Tim.

Hy Mike...thanks for the upload...I love this tune...I don't have a really big knowledge on electric blues...

Take a look at this. He's a great friend of mine. He's called Emanuele J Sintoni and is from Cesena, not so far from where I'm actually livin now, the music city of Bologna. He is more famous outside of Italy. He also opened for John Hammond. You can find his last album which is quite old, on ITUNES...and the new album is going to come very very soon...:)))

This videos are quite old

Great Idea!  Here's one of my favorites to play along too.  It takes me somewhere else every time.  The vibe and space on the song are really powerful.

Mike I followed these instructions and tried to upload my 3.72 mb mov file and after more than an hour it still said "uploading...please wait." The middle screen never changed.  Any advice?

My next album, "Wobble Walkin' " has a few spots where I turn off the pickup and chunck rhythm with the bass during a drum solo.

Yeah man! 78s!My favorite form of sound recording. Listening to music on 78 RPM records through a good tube system with a diamond needle is an experience that cannot be equaled. Especially well recorded 78s in excellent condition. I have a Count Basie 78 of "Exactly Like You" from around 1938/39 and I play it through a Dynaco souped up stereo amp and an Audible Illusions tube pre-amp hook up to six pair of switchable vintage speakers of all makes. WOW! it's SONIC HEAVEN!

By the way, during the Rubberlegs Williams sesion with Dizzy and Bird, one of the guys supposedly slipped some anphetamine into ol' Rubberlegs coffee, which is supposedly why he sounds the way he does here!

This is truly a beautiful song and my favorite version. Love the intro here whic,h chord wise, has nothing to do with song which is great. Most of  the earlier Billie Holiday Columbia period material are the best of the swing era musicians play very simple head arrangements. This make's it so intimate and beautiful it's my favorite Billie period, although each segment of her career has it's own magic.

Thanks Mike. I'll give it a try later today. I believe that I did follow these steps but perhaps the progress bar in step 3 did not get all the way despite waiting 15-20 minutes. Thanks again for the help.

Hi Roger .. here's a step by step image that will hopefully help.

Hi Roger .. that's the one.  I would upload the .mov file (smaller)

1. choose the file (upper left corner of screen)

2. click upload

3. wait for file to upload (there's a small progress bar under the upload button)

4. middle screen will change once the file is uploaded

5. click insert

You will see a placeholder in your post where the video will be.  Refresh the page .. and your video will show up once it's converted.

Does this help?

Mike

Thanks Mike. I have a laptop. It is an HP, model G72-B27CL Notebook. It came with a good webcam on board- I use it to Skype. It is just over one year old. I am not aware of any software on it that will record a video. Check out this link http://store.apple.com/us/product/D3381Z/A?. It seems like this Quicktime is for a PC? Any way I really appreciate the help.

Hi Roger .. good question.  I don't think Quicktime will work with the PC for recording a video (I use Quicktime on a Mac).  Your PC or webcam likely already came with software to record with your webcam.  A couple questions that will help me figure things out

1. Do you have a desktop or laptop?

2. Is it a webcam you bought (like a Logitech) .. or did it come with the PC?

3. What brand PC is it and what year?

Once I know these I can Google around and try and find you the answer.

I'm also going to make a guide in a week or two.

Looking forward to seeing the video!!

Mike

Mike,

Is Quicktime Pro 7 the only software needed to record and post my video to Sonic Junction? I have a PC. Thanks in advance for the help.

This video is my good friend Tad Walters playing Rolling Stone with Muddy's son, Big Bill Morganfield.

Muddy Waters used this structure on a couple of different songs. Still a Fool is my favorite. The groove is so strong, but there is something unstable about it...sounds like it could fall apart at any minute. I THINK Little Walter played second guitar on Still a Fool, but I cannot substantiate with a quick google search. I know he played second guitar on Honey Bee, which has a similar about to fall apart groove in my opinion.

Eddie Taylor playing it way up the neck in Bb.

I think the moral to the story is that this groove is in someway integral to the human psyche. Without getting too deep and New Age-y, playing this one feels almost like I think a meditation would feel to me.

I had the pleasure of seeing Duke live over the weekend (at the Turning Point in Piermont NY), and it was a great show, as usual.  One thing I came away with was:  does anyone sound better on inexpensive equipment than Duke?  I remember attending gigs in the early '80's, and seeing him use Tokai strats with a Pearce solid state PA (!) head, and he sounded great.  On saturday night, Duke used the p-90 equipped Epiphone he has used on some lessons here, along with an Eastwood L-5 copy, both of which are Korean, I believe.

Duke, were you running both the Louis electric and Evans amps together?  What were you using for stompboxes?

No matter what equipment you use, you can always get your sound.  That's an important lesson.

Oh, and if you haven't picked up "Low Down and Tore Up" yet-get it!

I chose the guitar because its portable, and also because you can play it and sing at the same time.  Before guitar I played trumpet (can't sing while you play) and piano (not portable).  I also remember hearing ZZ Hill as a small child.  A big inlfuence was my parents taking me to see BB King when I was 12.  I was amazed that anyone could make a guitar sound like that.
