Here's my return take on I'm Confessin'. For fun I made my own backing track (bass and drums) in iReal and added a 4/4 rhythm guitar track and a 2nd rhythm guitar that I did with a Leslie effect. iReal doesn't have a way (at least that I know of) to do 4/4 double time so I just kept the solo bridge in straight time. Anyways, as always, a great lesson.
This is great Marty and I liked your solo ideas a lot! When you were playing the melody my wife thought it was me. She's not easy to fool either. Nice track also! Duke
Thanks for the feedback. That's quite the compliment to fool the Duchess even for a second. It's probably because I've learned everything I know about this style of music from you. Thanks as always for teaching on SJ!
Here's my cut of Someday After Awhile. I did it as an instrumental. I tried to absorb the feeling of the tune and then played it in my style... which is pretty far from Freddie King but I tried to incorporate the ideas of playing in positions and phrasing that you presented. Thanks for a great lesson and backing track. Oh, and how you get that tone out of P90 guitars... I always wondered how you got that sound. Thanks for that tone tip!
Here's my run at West Side Shuffle. These lessons where we get to trade solos and 4's are always a ton of fun. I always pick up some new stuff when I go through the reissue lessons and try to incorporate them into my playing. Thanks so much for the great lesson and backing track.
Here's my cut at trying to incorporate some T-Bone style licks and chord ideas into my playing. I came up with a head reminiscent of the T-Bone shuffle and tried to fit T-bone ideas into a 3 chorus solo. I finished up with the head to close it out. Thanks for a great lesson and wonderful backing track.
Here's my take on Cookin'. I took the backing track that Mike provided at 175bpm and gassed it up to 200bpm with Anytune to match your recording... yikes! that's Cookin'! This was a ton of fun. Thanks so much for the great lesson!
Here's my take on Someone to Love. A great tune for these troubled times. Thanks so much for the lesson and the fantastic backing track. I had a great time working on this and learned so much... as I always do from your lessons.
Here's my run at Wash Out. I kept it in the same form as the original mainly because I think I could play that groove all day long :). I doubled the rhythm guitar part that you played which is also a fun groove to play. Thanks for another great lesson. These full backing tracks with bass and drums are just fantastic!
Hey Marty, You sound great on this. Very natural and comfortable with good time. I like that you are playing the basic solo but putting your spin on it also. Keep up the good work! Duke
Here's my run at Romance In The Dark. I worked on this tune the first time it was published but it was fun to revisit it. Wow that is such a fantastic track. So great to be able to practice playing behind a vocalist as superb as Sunny. Thanks for the great lesson.
SInce I had my old 67 Mustang out from recording Sonic Shuffle I was looking for another tune to try with it. Careless Love seemed like a perfect fit! I wanted to try all the rhythm parts and try it at a similar BPM (115) that you did on your album so I built up a bass and drum track in iReal. I did the flat tire rhythm and the rhythm part you played behind the keyboard over the modulation to C. I improvised a lead part over that C modulation in place of the keyboard. I also added a third rhythm part with some chord fragments to fill it out. This was a ton of fun. Thanks as always for teaching on SJ!
This was a ton of fun. I enlisted my old 67 Fender Mustang for this tune as it had the right vibe to play off what you did on the head. It was fun to work on matching up your timing on the head. You really lay back on the time and that took some practice to get in that groove and not play ahead of you. I finished up with a 2 chorus head and doubled myself on guitar to give it the same feel as the opening head. Thanks for a great lesson and a great track to work with.
Hi Duke,Thanks so much for the feedback. Your lessons have made it possible for me to play this music. I can't thank you enough teaching on Sonic Junction.
This will be a ton of fun. When you post the track would it be possible to also have one with just the bass and drums so we can also work on laying down the rhythm guitar as well as the lead?
Here's my take on In A Mellow Tone. I made a backing track in iReal. I modified the intro- based on the version by Ella Fitzgerald. I played your solo for this first chorus and then improvised a chorus. Great lesson.
Hi Scott, In case you did not find it... The backing track can be played by pressing the icon as shown in the screenshot above. As far as I know there is no way to download the backing tracks directly.
Here's my take on Salute to Charlie Christian. I made a simple backing track so I had to change up the intro. I added a second solo chorus that I improvised. It's a mashup of things I've learned along the way through your lessons. I tried to play mostly out of the chord shapes as Paul showed in the lesson.
As always, thanks for teaching here on Sonic Junction.

Hi Duke,
Hi Marty, Sounds good. I liked your interpretation of the melody before your solo. Good playing and tone!
Hi Duke,
Hi Duke,
Thanks Duke. I'm now up to 1/2 as fast as you used to be able to play it. :)

Hi Duke,
Hey Marty, Great job! You certainly are Cookin'! Congratulations, you now can play that tune faster than I can. Duke
Thanks Duke. I'm now up to 1/2 as fast as you used to be able to play it. :)
