Hello Maurizio,

i wouldn't answer for Corey but the greatest thing for me is to interact with Corey and have his feedback !So i suggest you to start the old lesson he'll tell you but also post simply thing on the lesson we're working now to have a good feedback. You can just post a simply alternate bass on the Diddie wah diddy lesson of this month and you'l have Corey advice on your groove and progress and that's priceless.

See you soon

JD

Hi Wieger,

Thanks for the details.  Yes, sounds like a driver issue (I had a driver issue like that with the exact same distortion many years ago).  My other idea is that it could be a CPU usage  issue ... meaning Safari is more CPU intensive than Chrome with respect to playing the video ... and therefore causes drop-outs on the audio.  You should be able to view your CPU usage via Activity Monitor.

Good luck and glad you found a solution.

Hi Paul, Those are my favorite versions of one of my favorite songs so you can count on that! Duke

Hi Mike,

Thank you for your quick response.

In the meantime I found out that the sound is perfect when I use Safari 7.0 with the Apple standard audio driver and the headphone jack on the mac.

Conclusion: the Presonus Universal Control audio driver I am using is not compatible with OSX 10.9 and Safari 7.0.

Funny though that everything works fine with the Presonus driver and Chrome. For the time being, I will use Chrome for Sonic Junction.

Replying to your questions: adjusting the volume has no effect and the distortion is best described as rapid dropouts at a constant rate, like a machine gun.

Next step: I'll check with Presonus for a driver update.

Best regards,

Wieger

Duke,

I want to suggest 'Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You'. I've loved the tune every since I heard on a Hot Lips Page LP years ago. There are some great versions out there: yours, Kenny Burrell's, and the King Cole Trio with Oscar Moore.

Thanks

Paul

Hi Wieger,

Thanks for the message and sorry for the issue.  I really appreciate all of the detail --- it helps a lot.

Testing different browsers and YouTube was the right choice.  The different browsers check whether or not it's a browser specific problem or one with your OS and/or Sonic Junction.  YouTube is a good test between Flash video (YouTube) and HTML 5 video (Sonic Junction).

Based on your results, it seems like it is a HTML 5 video / Safari issue.  Most likely Safari was updated with your OS.  One quick test

1. what happens if you turn down the volume of the video when viewing it via Safari?

... and one question

2. does the distortion sound like clipping / overdrive ... or something else?

Thanks and we will get it fixed.

Mike

Please help.

Shortly after I updated OSX to 10.9 the sound of the video lessons is distorted in Safari (but OK in Chrome). YouTube on Safari comes through undistorted.

Any suggestions anyone?

Many thanks!

Wieger

Hello All!

I'm new around here - currently on the "2 free lessons" access, but seriously considering joining. I can't find any reviews online of people's experience with Sonic Junction so I thought I might just ask some questions on here to get an idea of whether it's what I need. All in good spirit and intention :)

I'm 31, I've been playing guitar all my life. I play fairly primal electric blues (Buddy Guy is a big hero of mine). I was in a rock band but then had a baby 3 years ago (well, not me personally...) and have been living a very different life since! With limited time and flexibility on my hands, I've now got a 50's Rock'n'Roll band and we just play local functions.

I'm getting a little restless musically now and would like to get some new licks under my fingers, and some new ideas. I've been pretty much playing the same licks since I was a teenager! I was thinking I'd like to get some bop or swing in my playing. I've tried on and off in the past and have always put it down to an inability to think fast enough :) but I'd love to be able to play licks like, say Brian Setzer.

There are many free resources online these days, but two things drew me here - one is the great Duke Robillard, the other is the fact that it's just one place - you don't spend a whole evening surfing around the web instead of playing. But I notice that the lessons all seem to be learning songs, as opposed to say teaching concepts, theory, techniques, application and so on. My hesitation is that I may lose motivation to learn songs that I'm not going to perform because I know that within a few days of cracking them I will have forgotten how to play them!

So how do you guys feel that being a member here has contributed to your playing? And has the song-learning format carried new things over into your playing even when you've forgotten the song? I'd love to hear about your experiences and insights.

Thanks to all!

Joe

Corey - thanks very much for your comments - I must confess I was not in very good shape when I made these videos - I have taken a severe beating in about every life category possible this year - and my voice is in terrible shape - but especially on the last song I am proud of the arrangement - it took a long time to transpose the chord progression and find a way to incorporate a finger picking style and use some first position blues licks without turning it completely into a country blues number.  This is one of those songs that I look at as sort of a cross-over song - not purely blues - but probably would never have existed without the blues - and from a period when there were a lot of great songs that were I think inspired by the blues but were written for a different audience.  Especially on Broadway and where Broadway songwriters were used in Hollywood, there is a very strong influence of the Harlem Renaissance; i.e. Summertime, etc.  Tremendous creative exchanges going on.  Bill Broonzy had a big success with a country blues record of a song called "When Did You Leave Heaven" sometimes called "Little Angel Mine."  It was written by white Broadway songwriters for a Hollywood film and the original recording was very bland.  But Broonzy recognized some great lyrics and a blues progression and turned it into a great country blues number.

Thanks for the comment on the other song too - I am usually a "balls-out" singer - more primitive and basic - but John Estes sort of inspired me to stretch a bit in the direction of a smoother style.  I'm probably more comfortable though singing a Bukka White inspired version of "Fixin to Die."

I somehow missed this open mike session.  Sorry I did, but now that I've found I can go back and listen to everyone's stuff!

As far as Duke and Texas Flood, that album was the first place I heard that song performed by anyone--and it still sets the standard as far as I'm concerned!  After being a big Roomful fan from attending many of their appearances around the clubs in Boston, I missed them a lot when I moved to CA.  One day I was in a Tower Records and came across the album.  Bought it right away of course, still have it--though I'm currently without a turntable.

BB uses light strings now I think, but he's also well over 80 and it is inevitable to lose some of the energy as time goes on. Cut the legen some slack! I wish I can see that age and still be able to play my guitar..

I don't think that BB King's guitar sounds nearly as good now as it did years ago. Maybe that's because of those wimpy strings he uses.

Joe S
Joe S Oct 26, 2013

Then again, there's the famous advice given to Billy Gibbons by BB King - why make things harder for yourself. Slap on a set of 8's and have a ball!

I would think it's a matter of what works for you. So many players, myself included, have once rendered their guitar unplayable after reading about SRV's set up - and thta's no good for anyone :)

Yeah... I got Dan Earlwine's good book: "Guitar Player Repair Guide" and that covers it pretty good.

I think there is a good amount of validity to your thoughts about a higher action setup for blues guitar playing. For one thing, blues requires alot of emotional input, for example the "rake", if the action were set to low, it probably wouldn't sound strong enough or have the emotional content in the feeling of the lick. I find I tend to go for  my guitars with a slightly lower action setup when I want to play some jazzy type things, lots of jazz chords, etc., but when it comes to blues I usually grab my guitars with 11's and a slightly higher action setup. Thanks, hope my comments help! Frank Hurn

Hey Mike,

I like that idea. I will make sure you know my real first name. My name is Douglas, nickname Sir Douglas for being a VP of a school at 24 by the owner After the group in Texas.

My God Son just thought that was to much, so he changed it to Uncle Doougal :) Most call me Doug, old friends call me Dougie, Mom CAlled me Dougie Wray when I was in trouble. Spanich kids call me Douglas, cause to Them Doug sounds like dog and they like me. So I may have to sleep on this one, I am already getting tired.

I will keep you informed,so I thought i would have a little humor tonight. I know when I met Duke at the T Bone festival in Texas and asked him to sign my Tele I thought someone had tied my tongue. He was so nice and I had so many questions, but I just did not want to seem to aggresive. I am sure he would have beed glad to talk some, but I got weak in the knees. Strange to be 60 and say that.??

Thanks Iceman, sounds like good advice.  I did watch that video and got some of what he was saying.  I'm starting to sound pretty good on the song by playing it a lot, and, as you say, listening for the changes.  The more I do it the better I am getting at finding the right notes and avoiding the ones that don't sound good. One thing that works for me in learning a song like this is to play along with the entire song at first and really learn the melody.  Then I find it easier to play fills that compliment the melody, as well as have some anchor to hang a solo on.

I'm having trouble trying to get the Major/Minor pentatonic variable in my head as a blues player. I get it, sorta, but I can't seem to make it work and sound like the pros do. I wanna sound like the proverbial "seasoned" blues players.

Any chance that you might give us a lesson on that...?

Hi Tom, But I need to understand a bit better what you mean. Maybe you could show me in a video or pick a song that includes the type of playing you are speaking of? Thanks,Duke
