Thanks Duke - here's another take. Thanks as always for a great lesson, great advice and great encouragement. I owe so much to you and SJ!!!! Can't wait to see what's coming next!
Hi Charlie, I really enjoyed that. You've got the feel on the Freddy licks and I'm glad you keep soloing here and it builds up very nicely! And by the 3rd solo chorus you're playing yourself which is the whole point! Good natural transit from the Freddy licks to your own. Keep up the good work! Duke
Great lesson Duke, and great advice! I've been thinking about what it means to play like "yourself" (or me ; ) for a while now. Really encouraging to hear it from you. Here's a rough cut....
The tracks great and I'll work on a video this week. But can I share this? It's an "original" the band plays that I realise is basically this song (only nowhere near as good of course!!!) Never felt I quite nailed it - could never find the way I wanted to approach it, couldn't work out if it was B.B, T-Bone, Louis Prima (and I'm nowhere near good enough to play like me yet!) But this versions pretty decent (I hope)
Been working on this one this week (and cursing myself for not working on it since I last worked on this back in 2014!!! Can it be that long ago???) Thanks Duke for an awesome lesson!
I aim to revisit a lesson series a week, starting with this gem of a song. Haven't finished series yet, but took a rough take at the halfway mark. I LOVE Charlie Christian - it's invaluable to me to have his work taught by a master. Thanks Duke!
Great stuff Duke. Sure you must Kenny Burrell's version on 'Blues - the common ground'. Looking forward to digging into this track, especially the slower/smokier approach, Tiny Grimes and Jimmy Smith's too
Revisiting this in honor of the Duke's birthday (the other Duke, the guy who write this beauty : ) Lovely lesson and great playing - literally had a 'WOW' moment at one of the lines you played! Using lockdown to dig deeper into SJ, especially the heavyweight numbers like this one : )
Great start to a great series! Thanks Duke, this is exactly what I need right now (aside from the great learning I could sit and stare at that beautiful guitar all day!!! ; )
Like you say there are a ton of awesome numbers based on these changes - I totally trust your taste! I'd be fascinated to dig deeper into how Charlie Christian, Tiny Grimes and Oscar Moore approached them. Also, any chance you could speak to how you tackle these changes when the key would be better suited to chords rooted off the A rather than E string (e.g. when playing in Eb, or F)?

Thanks Duke - especially thanks for the track, it's invaluable to play along with!!!! PS lovely Tele : )
Awesome - thanks Duke! Especially thanks for the wise words of rhythm and its role in the band
Here's my take - I deliberaltly played over the last vocal verse as though it was extended solo (not that I'm one of THOSE players!!!!)
Awesome lesson, tone and advice! Thanks Duke.

This one played and it's very good. Nice tune and I recognized quite a few lines in your solo and the outro. Very nice!
Awesome! Can't wait to dig in!
God I LOVE this tune and your take on it Duke! Here's what I've been working on this week (excuse the interuptions from the kids!)

Very nice take on Confessin' Charlie! I really enjoyed that and the fact that you improvised on it building off my example. Very good! Duke

Nice. How you liking the Recording King? I picked one up a few weeks before lockdown and been messing around with some slide (got the time to now!)
Thanks Duke. Beautiful guitar (and hat : ) Always get a lot from you talking about the pioneers of swing. Stay safe

Beautiful - sounds like you got Dr John in for the vocal : ) Very cool!
Thats Duke on the vocal !!! Not Dr.John
Lovely Duke : ) Love Louis Jordan! The 6/9 chord reminded me of this 'Braggin', Dick Hymes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IarSdO49zsc

These are good questions and I'll try and address them soon Charlie. Duke

So hip! Love this one Duke : )
Here's my cut - as always it's an unpolished first cut just to get the flavor. Thanks Duke, as always, for all you share!
Thanks Duke! Enjoy Europe : )
