Ok, here's my cut. Really enjoying this one (Duke Ellington is the gold standard right?!)
Aside from being a cool tune and another great lesson, I'm starting (because I'm slow!) to more naturally take elements of other lessons into what I'm playing. For example one of the little gems you shared on 'Romance in the Dark' has found it's way into the way I play this.
Thanks Duke! : ) The guitar is a Gretsch New Yorker http://acousticguitar.com/gretsch-g9550-new-yorker-big-apple-to-the-core/ Pretty decent, low cost archtop. They recently brought out a model with a pickup as well, but this one's without (nowhere to hide ; )
Had sound trouble on my last attempt, so will delete that and post this. Absolutley loving this lesson - thanks Duke. Here I've done chord melody, rhythm and then tried to improvise a little solo.
Hi Charlie, Good work. nice solo section and rhythm too. The only spot that needs work is on the melody in the beggining on the E Eb change. Altogether you sound very good playing this. What guitar are you playing? Very nice tone. Duke

What a treat! And can't wait to get into that melody - sounds like the Sinatra version, on 'Wee Small Hours of the Morning' (best Sinatra album? So heavy it should only be available on prescription!)
Ok, here's my cut (complete with a few disapproving shouts of 'Dad' from my 4 year old in the background)
Hope I can do some justice to the awesome stuff I'm getting from your lessons here Duke - can't tell you how much you've helped me as a player!
And for all the SJ cats out there, if you haven't already heard them, check out the small group sessions Jimmy Witherspoon did with Kenny Burrell. Some of the coolest blues you'll ever hear!
Lovely lesson Duke (as always). Big fan of this tune, so many great versions, from Bessie Smith to Jimmy Witherspoon, Otis Spann and Freddie King.
One question - the opening we play the 6 and 2 chords as major, but when we're into tune they're minor. I'm guessing decision which to play is personal taste/feel in moment. But that has to be restricted depending on how complex line up gets (say you had a bunch of horns, or several people taking turns on fills)?
Charlie, on these old time blues the 1,6,2,5 is comonly played that way with the intro outtro chords and sometimes ever the turnaround too. It a matter of taste but I feel it sounds best in this old style .music.
Ok - here's what I got. Tele thru a little Champion. I LOVE Freddie, and know I'm nowhere near doing him justice. Still try to shake the 'English' out of my playing (as in too many notes, not enough feel) but I am from London!
Thanks for yet another great lesson Duke, can't wait to see what comes next!
Hi Charlie, Actually, you sound very good! No apoligies about the number of notes needed. You play very well and your solo built nicely. I enjoyed it a lot. keep up the good work! Duke
Here's a quick/rough cut as it's been a while (I'm lousy at making these videos - it's not th playing it's the tech side!)
Looking forward to what's coming next. My band just starting playing this tune the way King Curtis does on his album of the same name - another of millions of very cool versions!
Thanks Duke - and thanks for the refresh on that gorgeous chord! I got it now. Really love this tune - thanks for turning me on to Dave Barbour - picked up a great album of his and Peggy's live radio shows. Awesome stuff!

Hi Charlie, That sounds very good! now your ready to start on the lead guitar track. Nice arpeggio at the end. Duke
Very cool!!!
Thanks Charlie!

Hi Charlie, I love Sinatra's version of it. Fabulous arrangement also! Duke
Great lesson. And never apologise for "preaching" - I for one am a convert ; )
Seriously, I find this advice/experience incredibly helpful!
Thanks Charlie, Duke
Thanks Duke. Thought I knew how to play this years ago, but I was missing plenty of little goodies!!!

What a great lesson - not just for the (as always) great music, but the love of it you expressed. Thanks Duke!
Here's my cut of where we are so far (some obvious fluffs, which I can't try and pretend I intended as jazz! ; )
Great lesson as always Duke!
Hubert and Wolf is where it all began for me. Looking forward to what's up next!!!
Me too Charlie! Duke
Wow - Tiny Grimes!! Thanks for this Duke, can't wait to dig in on this one.

Thanks Duke. John Lee Hooker is where it all began for me. I could listen to stories about him all day and night long.
Will work on this great number and make a video within a week.
Happy Christmas Duke - and all the SJ cats!

So cool! And dig the hat! Thanks for doing this despite recovery - really appreciate opening the door on this cool Bill Jennings stuff
BILL JENNINGS!!!! Every tune on SJ is a classic, but this is something else! Thanks Duke
