This lesson has been on my list for sometime now and I finally had a chance to go through the chords and the melody yesterday.
While the Nat Cole Trio (Quartet) plays this in G, I notice that T bone Walker as well as Louis Armstrong play this in F#. This is likely due to the horns. Have you altered key signatures to accomodate horn sections? While all chords are movable, its hard to do on the fly - for me anyway.
By the way on the Nat Cole version, if that's Oscar Moore, he knocks me out. I'll be stealing his lead.
Sounds good Steve. BTW, that progression is very close to Bill Bailey so you sorta get two songs for the price of one. should stivck to a little more 4/4 rhythm would work best, except for the ending of course. paul is great to learn jazz picking from. keep up the good work! Duke
After a lot of research I recently picked up a solid state Quiter Aviator 1 x 12 to ease my achin back. its 33lbs. The 1 x 8 model has the same amp section but wieghts ony 22 lbs. Check out the 2 x 10, again the same amp section, in a show down with vintage Fender https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqaoOhjrQ34
the Aviator is made in the good ol USA.
I generally use a modified Deluxe Reverb which weights in at 46 lbs.
Wow Steve, Very cool! You defintely have a grasp on that style for sure. Good speed on those fast riffs. i have lost quite a lot of speed over the past decade so I'm jealous! The import thing is the feeling and you got that very well. good singing also! Enjoyed this very much. It's great to come back from my tour and see you all working so hard on the lessons! Duke
As promised here is a comprehensive video. Lots of improvising. I snuck in some Kenny Burrell and others - particularily over the call and response bass section. A great song. I am proud to be part of this journey.
I'm breaking in a new old box and liking it way better than the 175 I had a few years back. I sold my L5. I just wasn't comfortable with it - great guitar tho.
I've been working on the short A over the solo. I think i got it here on the first solo verse but i lost count on the 2nd verse.
With the assumption that my understanding of the chord timing is good, I'll now move on to the solos. This may take a while. But its where i want to be.
Hi Steve, The chords on the melody are correct. It's just that the second ending has to resolve a little diffrerently to set up the bridge. The first A section of the solo can end end a few different ways chord wise like 3/6/2/5 but in he 2nd A, is what your play for chords is right but when you get to the last 2 bars is wher it's a little diferrent. it should be 1 measure of the 1chord then 1 beat on Cm7 beat on F then two beats on Bb. Because it resolves to the one, it goes through the last chords of the 2nd A a bit quicker. Perhaps this song is not the corect example of that. But I will demonstrate it in my next lesson if I'm not clear with words. It will be easy to ubderstand when I play it. Thanks, Duke
I noted the F13 in the chord chart. But, when I was playing it (in the Freddie Green school of chording) i didn't hear a big tonal voice from the F13. The F13 is an F7 with the addition of the G played on the B string.
I think the big thing for me currently with this lesson is expanding my inventory of chord substitutions for the 1, 6, 2, 5. I think i have a basic handle on the ones you have shown but as you said there are many more. The Gm7 configuation is new to me.
Another learning point for me is to hear when to go to the Bridge without a cue, as is the case of the 2nd Bridge which is cued with a snare flange. I beleive its 8 measures, here i am concentrating on listening to the lead and bass over counting.
Hi Steve, Good job. One thing I noticed a few times is you didn't play the second ending. What I mean is, on the second A section before the bridge, the 2nd A section resolves a little differently (during the solo choruses only) this "2nd ending" is a little different in how it resolves which makes it obvious that the bridge is coming. Hopefully that's in the chord chart. If not it should be. Good feel on the rhythm Steve.....Duke
Great song. Here i am attempting to pick up on Little Milton's syle rather than doing it note for note. I have kept some of what i think are key phrases tho.
Thanks Duke
I'll try that before moving on to the solo lessons.

I hope to put down a track soon.
Cheers, and hope the shoulders better.

Thanks Duke
Will do about the 4 4.
Hi Paul and Duke
I recorded this while listening to the track. I was having so much fun i couldn't stop.

Thanks Bruce, Barry and Steve H for your positive comments.
Practice, practice practice, But when it comes to playing live, play from the heart - keep your head out of it as much as you can.
Cheers and Happy Easter

A life study.

Very nice job Steve, great playing!
Really nice playing and singing, Steve. Wish I had that fluidity.

I am counting the A sections until the short A section comes in right?
At least until i can feel it coming.
Steve
Duke
Thanks for the chord clarification. I'll be going over this first chance i get. And hopefully a comprehensive video soon.
Cheers
Steve
I am not doing the CM7 exact as taught as i am tring to inject my own licks here and it isn't exact yet.
Also I am using 126 bpm
steve
Hi Duke
I look forward to the clarification in the next new lesson.
Cheers
Steve
Here it is again. But, I can't say i am hearing a change in the A section chords just before the bridge during the solos.
Steve

Thanks Bruce. I'll overlook the chord chart and review Duke's video for the correct content.

Hey Duke
Is it the F13 that I'm missing?
I noted the F13 in the chord chart. But, when I was playing it (in the Freddie Green school of chording) i didn't hear a big tonal voice from the F13. The F13 is an F7 with the addition of the G played on the B string.
If it is the F13 then I give it another try.
That chord is mislabeled, actually. It should be an F9, not F13. F13 would require the addition of a D.
Thanks Bruce. I'll overlook the chord chart and review Duke's video for the correct content.

I'll check the Basie track - hope its on the net.
In researching the Memphis style i came across the Moten Swing as well. Another lesson to follow up on.
Can't say enough how much i appreciate your guidance.
Happy New Years
